To lock a bike at a BIKETOWN station or to a public bike rack, insert the U-lock into the two designated slots on the right side of the back wheel, pushing the lock in from right to left. Wait until you feel the click and see the "thank you" screen on the LCD display.
To see how to lock a bike, watch this short video. Note that if you are having trouble inserting the lock, a wheel spoke may be in the way of the lock. Turn the back wheel slightly to correct the issue. If the bike is not locked properly, the bike will beep and flash at you until it is locked.
Bikes can be returned to any station with an open rack – you don't have to bring it back to where you picked it up, making BIKETOWN ideal for one-way trips. Find available stations on the System Map or mobile app.
If the station closest to your destination is full, you can lock your bike at a public bike rack close to the station for no additional charge – look for the racks marked with an orange BIKETOWN sticker.
If you lock your bike at a public bike rack further from a station, a $2 convenience fee applies. If you lock your bike outside of the service area (marked on the System Map and mobile app), a $10 fee applies. Make sure you place the U-lock around the bar of a public rack and then into the two slots in the back wheel to ensure it’s secured.
Please note that it never OK to lock a bike to itself without being attached to a station rack or a public bike rack. Doing so may result in a $1500 lost bike fee.
